Core 21 Quick Hitter - Subira, Tulzidi Caravanner

With Core 21 Pre-Releasing this Friday, June 26, we wanted to start a new series taking a quick look at the new legendaries in the set and how you could start a Commander build around them on a budget. Buckle your seat belts people, we're going to go fast and furious here!

Let's start with Subira, Tulzidi Caravanner:

There are a couple options that stand out with her, tokens and discard. Let's focus on a token build for this quick hitter. What cards can we start with that will create a lot of tokens in a hurry? Outside of a theme for the tokens, like goblins or elementals, the more the merrier are welcome at our token party.

Dragon Fodder ($0.11), Forbidden Friendship ($0.06), Hordeling Outburst ($0.18) and Tilonalli's Summoner ($0.45) all do an amazing job at producing a lot of tokens in a hurry. Tilonalli's Summoner is especially effective at token production because we will reach the City's Blessing quite quickly with this deck and then all the tokens she creates will stick around. She is very good at what we want to do. So we created a lot of tokens, how do we protect them?

Ok, I know what you're thinking, how does Goblin War Drums ($0.30) giving all the tokens menace protect them? It makes them just a bit more difficult to chump block and helps to get just a bit more damage through. The card that really helps protect all those tokens is Dolmen Gate ($1.72), which prevents all combat damage that would be dealt to attacking creatures you control. Now that's some serious protection! Ok, so now are little tokens are protected, how do we beef them up and win some games?

Impact Tremors ($1.18) and Cavalcade of Calamity ($0.23) are both great at creating damage out of thin air. Impact Tremors is especially good because it deals damage to EACH opponent. Torbran, Thane of Red Fell ($0.85), Insult // Injury ($0.47) and The Flame of Keld ($0.19) are all great at helping to multiply the damage your tokens are dealing. Those little 1/1's can start punching well above their weight class with these cards out! But this is Commander and what fun is Commander without an absurdly difficult 3-4 card combo that, if it works, will go down in legend in your playgroup?

So here are the X's and O's of this combo: use all those tokens to create a bunch of mana with Battle Hymn ($0.57). Turn that mana into a super duper wholesale size amount of tokens with Goblin Offensive ($1.80) and then turn all of our 1/1's into 4/4's with Hellion Eruption ($0.14). Now that we executed the play perfectly, what card is the MVP of our quick hitter?

Burn at the Stake ($1.22) is the MVP of this quick hitter for it's ability to knock an opponent out seemingly out of the blue. For 5 mana, basically every creature you tap is going to deal 3 damage to one player. So if you tap 10 creatures, you are going to deal 30 damage to a poor, unsuspecting opponent. It's a great way for a budget deck to level the playing field against a more powerful deck in a hurry and that's why it is the MVP.

So there you have it, 15 cards for $9.47 that will help you start building a powerful Subira, Tulzidi Caravanner deck on a budget!

There will be more Core 21 Quick Hitters to come so be on the lookout for those! Preorders for Core 21, Chandra Signature Spellbook, Jumpstart and much more are open. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to Krisy and ask!

Stay Super,

Tim
